Course Details

This totally practical and inspirational four week course will unlock your creativity and dramatically improve the quality of your writing whether you are a professional writer, a complete beginner or somewhere in between.

Learn tools and techniques and work with your personal tutor and other writers to see your writing come alive on the page in a way that  will excite you and make other people want to read what you have written.

Week One:  Learn how to tap into the power of your imagination - the true source of creativity.

Week Two:  Explore what is stopping you from reaching your creative potential as a writer and learn how to create emotion in your writing using bricks of significant detail. This helps bring your characters and writing to life.

Week Three: Learn how to further develop characters and start writing scenes. You will gain key insights into story structure and how a story works at a deep level. You will also learn how to build images into your work, one of the fundamental building blocks of fiction.

Week Four:  Write a guided short story applying everything you have learnt from the course. The class will also show you how storytelling is a profound dance between structure and imagination.

Experience the joy of unlocking your creativity, seeing your writing come alive on the page and making writing part of your life.

"It is an understatement to say I learnt more about writing from the workshops than I did in three years studying (creative writing) at university.” Ali Gripper, former Fairfax journalist and author of The Barefoot Surgeon

How the Online Course Works

We will assign you an experienced tutor who will coach and guide you every step of the way. They will keep you accountable, motivated and inspired as you work through the online materials and master the key lessons of each session.

One of the advantages of the online course is that you can work at your own pace.

Each week, you will work through specific daily exercises designed to put the tools and techniques you are learning into practice. Once you've done the exercises you will post them onto your class Writers' Board, our unique interactive forum.

Your tutor will give you feedback on two pieces of your writing every week.

As well as receiving feedback from your tutor, you will interact with your fellow writers by learning to give and receive targeted feedback. This will nurture your creativity and develop your writing.

How Much Time is Required Daily?

The time required for actual writing per day starts off with as little as 10 -15 minutes. It is by doing a little every day and forming a writing habit that you become a writer. This way you experience the pleasure of accessing your creativity on a regular basis and working towards making your writing dreams a reality.

However, the whole process from reading your lessons, writing your exercises, typing them up and then posting them onto the Writers' Board and giving feedback could take around 45 minutes a day, five times a week. You can do much more if you have time!

The practical application of the tools and techniques provided, coupled with the interactive writing exercises and targeted feedback, will see your writing take a quantum leap forward over the four weeks.

Testimonials Unlocking Creativity

  • Karen M. Davis

"After two unsuccessful manuscripts I was searching for a creative writing course I could do to give me the confidence and tools needed to find a stronger voice and allow me to tap into my imagination. Unlocking Creativity did all this and more. I walked away from this course feeling much more confident in my own abilities as well as full of motivation to start my next manuscript, which turned into my first fictional crime novel Sinister Intent."
  • Lia Weston

"During one of the Unlocking Creativity exercises, I ended up developing a character who became the basis of my second novel, 'Those Pleasant Girls'. I'm delighted to say that 'Those Pleasant Girls' is being published with Pan Macmillan. If anyone is in doubt about whether to seriously pursue their writing, I'd encourage them to try this course—you never know where it's going to lead!" Those Pleasant Girls, published April 2017
  • Vanessa Stubbs

"Before I did the Unlocking Creativity course I knew I loved to write creatively but had no idea how I might start to channel that into something like a novel. The course teaches the basics of storytelling in a really accessible and inspiring way. Things like the importance of sensory detail in scene setting, writing a character’s emotion and conflict on every page.‘The techniques really worked for me and I’m still a little bit amazed I was able to write a book and have it published using them. I refer to the notes I took during Unlocking Creativity even while
  • Ashley Hay

Winner of The Sydney Morning Herald and Banjo Patterson awards for short fiction. "The course got me to push myself in a completely different direction at an exhilarating speed. And the writing followed." Her most recent novel, The Railwayman’s Wife, was published to critical and popular acclaim. It won the 2014 Colin Roderick Prize and the People’s Choice Award at the 2014 NSW Premier’s Prize, and was also long-listed for the Miles Franklin and Nita B. Kibble awards.

Update: Helen's story was further developed into her debut novel 'Promising Azra' being launched & published by Allen & Unwin, July 2016.
  • Ali Whitelock

"I loved Unlocking Creativity so much, I returned and did it a second time and will definitely do it again (and again). The support and encouragement from Roland, Kathleen and your fellow writers is inspirational and hugely motivational. It’s the best thing I did for my writing and the best thing I did for myself."
  • Caroline Roessler

"I can’t believe how much I’ve loved this course. How much I’ve looked forward to coming every week, despite some initial anxiety that I’d be a complete failure. It’s made me feel quietly proud that I’ve actually made this commitment to start writing. The doing of it is so wonderfully fulfilling. A really empowering experience. Brilliant." ( Rest in Peace C)
  • Yasmin Boland

"Reading back over my first novel, I'm aware of a change at the point where I started doing the Writers' Studio course (Unlocking Creativity). It's where my descriptions went from run of the mill to, I think, much more visual. No one can give you a secret formula for 'how to write', but the Writers' Studio seems able to unleash the wild writer beast in us all!"
