The Writers’ Studio Short Story Competition for 2023
Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your entry.
Entries must be between 1500 words and a maximum of 2500 words.
Deadline: 5pm on Tuesday, 31 October 2023
First Prize $500 / Second Prize: $250 / Third Prize: $100
Winners will be notified in December by email, and announced in our December newsletter.
The Top 3 Winning Entries will be published on the Writers’ Studio website.
How to Submit an Entry:
Email your entry as per below to: entry@writerstudio.com.au
In your Covering email you must include:
- Your Name
- Your Address
- Your Mobile Phone Number
- The Title of your entry
- Your attached entry in .pdf file format only
- The file name of your .pdf attachment must match the title in your covering email, and the same title must be at the top of your .pdf entry.
- Do not include your name on your .pdf entry
Format:
Your entry must be submitted as a .pdf file attached to the covering email as per above
Formatting: Times New Roman, 12 point, double spaced
Payment:
A $11 entry fee (incl. GST) must be paid for each individual entry.

- Entry is open only to adults aged 18 and over.
- The entry must be the original work of the entrant.
- All entries must be unpublished, whether in print or online.
- All copyright remains with author.
- Entries must be emailed only and be received by 5pm AEST on Tuesday, 31 October.
- Receipt of entry will be acknowledged by email.
- Entry fees are non-refundable.
- The title of the work must be identical to the title in the cover email and the .pdf file name.
- All Instructions form part of the Terms and Conditions.
- Winners will be notified in December 2023, and announced in our monthly newsletter.
- The decision of the judge will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The competition will be judged by Zahid Gamieldien
Zahid Gamieldien is an author, editor, screenwriter and senior tutor at the Writers’ Studio. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. His fiction has appeared in literary publications including Overland, Meanjin, Kill Your Darlings, ‘shorts’ by Platypus Press, Island Magazine and the ‘best of’ 40 Years of the UTS Writers’ Anthology. His screenwriting has been listed for prizes such the Australian Writers’ Guild’s John Hinde Award and the AMC One-Hour Pilot Award. His novel, All The Missing Children, will be published by Ultimo Press in June 2024. The writing of All the Missing Children was supported by a Varuna House residency and a major arts grant from Create NSW. Zahid is currently working on a television series based in Queensland and his next novel.
