What People Have Said About

UNLOCKING CREATIVITY

Dates and Course Fees About Online Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the experiences people have had after doing Unlocking Cretivity.

Yasmin Boland said just before publishing her second novel in July, 2003. "Reading back over my first novel, I'm aware of a change at the point where I started doing the Writers Studio course. It's where my descriptions went from run of the mill to, I think, much more visual. No one can give you a secret formula for 'how to write', but the Writers Studio seems able to unleash the wild writer beast in us all! And what I learned there in 1998 has stayed with me ...

Richard Waters. "I have just completed a wonderful course that really does deliver what it's title promotes. Inside all of us - I know that now, all of us - is a creative force that can be harnessed. At times over the the past weeks I have felt like it' been hard work, I've felt under pressure, I've felt confronted and lain bare. But then, so has everyone else. I now have an inkling of what I might be capable of, and must resolve to never forget that. Most of all, it really has been more a fun experience than just a "learning" one."

Stephen Beer. "Attending this course has given me the confidence and reassurance that I can continue to release my inner story. The support and interest of the rest of the group is quite amazing and very genuine, and I found my interest in their work equally fascinating. The course showed me that we all have totally different styles, all quirky, all unique and that there is room out there for all of it. I learnt how to let go."

Andrew Blanch. "The whole course was over before I knew it. Each Tuesday night at The Studio was full of new skills and lessons. And each day/night inbetween I surprised myself with the exercises I did. So much to write about and my whole life to do it. I cant wait to start the first draft course. I am well truly on a journey that both scares and excites me. And as time has gone by, I am excited more and scared more, but excited by the fear. The feedback I needed was fantastic. I learned so much from myself and others. I am enjoying writing more now than I realised was possible. And I anticipate I will enjoy it more, the more I grow and my writing with it."

Mandy Newman. "It was fantastic - the best course I have ever done. I now look at the world differently and am now going to go back and look and rewrite everything (fiction) I have ever attempted to write. I've learnt to trust myself - however wacky - keep writing - so many things - too numerous to mention! I'm sure my writing has improved - the way I understand and write and feel about the world surely has. It was brilliantly organised, seamless, lovely leaders - hard to believe that so many great writers and lovely people could be in the room at the same time."

Martin McNamara. "I just took this really interesting writing course where we learned about the details that make for good writing. Including using bricks of detail that capture the 5 senses, images that evoke emotions, cuts to move the story along, character journeys frompersonal weakness, struggle to change. And the importance of pressure to facilitate that change. Also learnt how to put all these elements together to write scenes and whole stories. We learnt about having a plan and then not caring about that plan as we do the actual writing."

Be Yeo. "This has been one of the more worthwhile things I have spent my money on. Truly an inspirational journey of writing and for all walks and levels of life - I'd like to see you do it too. I'd like to see my mother take part in it, I'd like to see it be part of the syllabuses for high school. Yet I wonder if it would lose it's appeal if you weren't actually paying for it. Hmmm... still even just as a creative outlet.... a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening it would be a bonus. For those people that truely have intentions of becoming a writer... it was the best recommendation that Rachel Oakes-Ash could have given me. She was spot on! Hit the nail right on the head!"

Will Lambert. "I've started writing. Everyday with the Writing Studio. It's been fascinating. The best part is being allowed to write absolute shit. In fact they encourage it. It takes the pressure off and it really helped build my confidence. Writing first thoughts has been a lot of fun and imagination inspiring. They gave us techniques which actually helped. I thought it might hinder but it threw open more opportunities. The biggest thing I got out of this is if you want to write you just have to physically write."

Karina Newport. "You've said you've never heard me talk so passionately about my writing as I have after every Tuesday night. At last! The reason is for the first time I'm empowered to get writing. The story I want to tell is inside me and the Unlocking Creativity course has given me the tools to extract it. I'm not afraid to write anymore and am doing it for myself only. Once I realised that I didn't ned to write for an audience, or to be funny or succesful, my natural style evolved and I've got the confidence to keep going."

Philippa Wherrett. "I've just finished that writing course I've been doing and I'm going to miss the class - the communal creativity and humming of like minded writers on a mission. I nearly missed the last class, but went at the last minute and I'm so glad I did. Because I heard some great stories, and I wrote some more about Del which was nice, since the last time I wrote about him I killed him off! But he lives on. In fact he's driving me mad, telling me his story morning noon and night. But I can't complain. Not really. most importantly I'm writing every day, getting into a routine which I've avoided up until now. So watch out Del - here I come."

Alison Lennon. "I'm a bit of a cynic at the best of times I guess. It's hard not to be when I feel I must be critically alert at work. However, I've really enjoyed this course. It's given me a chance to break out of my mindset - well at least to some degree. I think learning to just write and let thoughts flow was good advice. Also bricks of details - though I realised from the exercises I kinda understood that anyway. I'm not sure where I want to go next. I still think I hold back from exploring emotional journeys. I tend to pick characters that are simple and unable to be judged. I still have a lot to learn but I've enjoyed the exeprience so far."

Laura Watson. "Have just finished a great creative writing course. It was a lot of fun - more fun than I would have thought but the great thing it taught me is that writing/creativity is within all of us. The process of creation is not forcing or learning, but a process of discovery. I've found that with the right help and advice I can write things even I like. But the ultimate gift is knowing that the daily act of writing will unlock a pathway to my soul. Just do it!"

Caron Kanareck. "Eventually I went on a writing course. I was skeptical, didn't think you could teach someone how to write. I've been writing for ages as you know, but before this I never had the courage to show my work to anyone else. And over here that is a part of what we do. The course is unexpected, vital, fresh, makes you think of ideas and notions that you never knew you had. It disolves 'writer's blocks' . I have learnt so very much and have been guided by patient teachers who would not allow negativity to prevail. It has been so worth while and liberating, you should do it too, become your dream."

Karena Slaninka. "You were right. The course is fantastic. I didn't really know what to expect. But I trusted and went along for the ride and really feel as though I've gained a great deal more confidence than I had before. And this is probably the most profound thing really. Oh and another profound thing I also discovered just how much of a perfectionist I am. I expect myself to be perfect when it's not possible and how much this has stopped me from doing anything in the past like this. I've figured out that I am creative and expressive and I surprise myself with the flight of fancy that my imagination takes me on. What a journey!!"

Stuart Kay. "I've just completed the Unlocking Creativity Course at The Writers' Studio. It was a revelation for me. I've been struggling with my writing for years, picking it up, putting it down, writing a couple of paragraphs and forgetting it for months. I did that for various reasons - laziness and not meeting my own standards being the main ones. I've learnt here that it is important just to write. Write anywhere at any time, but whatever you do, write. And don't judge your writing. Tell the inner critic to shut up and leave you alone for awhile!"
