The
Online Genre Course
The
Online Genre Critique Course takes the
Online Character and Critique Group a step
forward and introduces you to the power of
genre.
Genres
represent the modern archetypal journeys.
This
five-session course will enable you
to develop and explore the characters you want to
write about within an archetypal framework.
Each
session will give you the tools to write one or two
short stories that follow the fundamental steps of
the particular genre you are exploring.
Every
week you'll write a series of four scene, short
stories involving the following five genres. These
are:
Love
Comedy
Action
Thriller
Fantasy
By
exploring the various genres, you will take your
understanding of story and character to another
level. And you might be surprised how much you
enjoy writing in a style that you never considered.
In addition, understanding genre helps you realise
the possibilities and shape of a longer
work.
Genre
is also a key tool in marketing your work. Agents
and publishers need to know where your story fits
in the scheme of things. What shelf it fits into in
the bookstore.
If
you can't give them a clear idea of what you've
got, you'll find it very difficult to convince them
to read your work. (This is something dealt with in
greater depth in the Novel and Script Courses. But
being clear of what genre your work fits into is a
big start.
At
The Maui Writers Conference, all agents,
publishers and writers emphasised the importance of
knowing what genre your story fitted
into.
Most
importantly, while exploring genre, you'll keep
your writing momentum alive, continue to explore
characters and stories, and develop your writing
skills.
About the importance of Genre
According
to the American writing teacher, John Truby,
writers typically underestimate the difficulty
in mastering genre.
He
said, "The reason genre is so important is that
the entire entertainment business is based on it.
Genres aren't just systems for expressing certain
themes.
They
are also strategies for
storytelling.
One
of the ways genres set themselves apart from one
another is that they each ask a different central
question or force the hero to make a crucial
decision."
Each
genre is filled with story beats and themes that
are highly choreographed.
You
still have to do each genre story in an original
way.
But,
according to Truby, harnessing the power of genre
will take you a long way toward your goal of being
a top professional writer.
Genre and the Mythic Form
At
a deep level, genres are the modern myth
form.
Each
genre takes a character on a particular
journey.
Understanding
genre enables you to tap into universal archetypal
patterns that audiences/readers can relate to on a
deep level.
These
patterns give your stories added meaning,
resonance, character development and drama.
Love is ultimately about transcending the
ego to find a higher form of love and seeing love
as a way of life.
You
will explore ways of getting romance into your
stories.
Fantasy is about finding the magic within
and seeing the magic in the everyday.
Discover
the benefits of letting your imagination rip and
seeing where it takes you.
Comedy explores the folly of the human ego
in pursuit of love and material ambition. The
absurdities of how we human beings can
behave.
Learn
the dynamics of character-centred comedy, and how
to get more humour into your writing and sustain it
over a story.
Thrillers are about finding the courage to
face your worst nightmare
Think
of ways to challenge your characters to the core.
Action is about letting go and accessing the
power within. About exploring how we act in the
world.
