Roland Fishman discusses the
Unlocking Creativity Course

"I have just completed the most extraordinary course – Unlocking Creativity ONLINE at The Writers' Studio.  You know I’ve wanted to be a writer for so many years and have been trying for at least the last ten – well this course has finally made me into one.

Our online tutor, Andrew, is incredible with his feedback – unfailingly perceptive, generous and encouraging and as a result everyone has experienced a great surge of confidence in themselves and their writing. The whole experience has left me exhilarated and optimistic, with a feeling that I am finally on the way to fulfilling my dream."

Morgan Stuart

“It’s been so cathartic to be part of a creative environment where you feel excited about posting your work, and each day I’ve looked forward to reading the critiques, on both mine and others’ works.

Our tutor, Andrew, has boosted my confidence beyond belief through his insightful feedback, and it’s him I have to thank for rekindling my enthusiasm for writing, for making it fun again and for encouraging me to explore and unleash my creative spirit!."

Stacey Mitchell, Kuwait

"This has been such an exciting adventure, not only in inviting me to bring out the best in my writing but also in bringing out the best in myself. Turning up at the page is a bit like life. You turn up, you write one sentence, and then another.

In life you live a moment, another, and then one more, as truthfully as you can, staying open to all it brings you ..."

Peter Taylor UK

"Thanks to this course I have embraced myself as a writer and to me this is one of the greatest gifts of all I got from this course. Writers block is simply a thing of the past and now I know what that was all about. I can’t thank you all enough for this transforming journey.

Peter Hamilton

"This has been one of the more worthwhile things I have spent my money on. Truly an inspirational journey of writing and for all walks and levels of life. For those people that truly have intentions of becoming a was the best recommendation that Rachel Oakes-Ash could have given me. She was spot on! Hit the nail right on the head!"

Be Yeo

"I've just completed the Unlocking Creativity Course at The Writers' Studio. It was a revelation for me. I've been struggling with my writing for years, picking it up, putting it down, writing a couple of paragraphs and forgetting it for months.

I've learnt here that it is important just to write. Write anywhere at any time, but whatever you do, write. And don't judge your writing. Tell the inner critic to shut up and leave you alone for awhile!"

sinster intent
"After two unsuccessful manuscripts I was searching for a creative writing course I could do to give me the confidence and tools needed to find a stronger voice and allow me to tap into my imagination. Unlocking creativity did all this and more .I walked away from this course feeling much more confident in my own abilities as well as full of motivation to start my next manuscript, which turned into my first fictional crime novel Sinister Intent."

Karen M. Davis published by Simon & Schuster

"Reading back over my first novel, I'm aware of a change at the point where I started doing the Writers' Studio course (Unlocking Creativity). It's where my descriptions went from run of the mill to, I think, much more visual.

No one can give you a secret formula for 'how to write', but the Writers' Studio seems able to unleash the wild writer beast in us all!"

Yasmin Boland - author, journalist, astrologer - Carole King is an Alien and All the Rage

STAR_ATTRACTION‘Before I did the Unlocking Creativity course I knew I loved to write creatively but had no idea how I might start to channel that into something like a novel. The course teaches the basics of storytelling in a really accessible and inspiring way. Things like the importance of sensory detail in scene setting, writing a character’s emotion and conflict on every page.

‘The techniques really worked for me and I’m still a little bit amazed I was able to write a book and have it published using them. I refer to the notes I took during Unlocking Creativity even while I’m working on my second book for Penguin.'

Vanessa Stubbs, author and journalist, Star Attraction

Seaweed1"I loved Unlocking Creativity so much, I returned and did it a second time and will definitely do it again (and again). The support and encouragement from Roland, Kathleen and your fellow writers is inspirational and hugely motivational. It’s the best thing I did for my writing and the best thing I did for myself."

Ali Whitelock - author of Poking Seaweed with a Stick and Running Away From The Smell

barossa living"I can’t believe how much I’ve loved this course. How much I’ve looked forward to coming every week, despite some initial anxiety that I’d be a complete failure. It’s made me feel quietly proud that I’ve actually made this commitment to start writing. The doing of it is so wonderfully fulfilling. A really empowering experience. Brilliant."

Caroline Roessler - former managing editor of the Australian Women's Weekly and current editor of Barrossa Valley Living magazine

Comprehensive online course materials taking you through an inspirational step-by-step creative process that will enable you to realise your potential as a writer and develop a practical understanding of classic story structure.

Carefully designed daily writing exercises that build on each other facillitating your learning of the art and craft of writing through having a profound yet practical experience.

Interactive component where you receive targeted feedback from your personal online tutor helping you to develop a writing habit, learn and integrate the key course lessons and maintain creative momentum.

You will also interact with your fellow writers and learn from and be inspired by them.

This unique process will take you and your writing to a whole new level of clarity and creative expression.

One day before the class commences, we will send you instructions and passwords enabling you to access all the course materials online and our interactive Writers' Board.

We will assign you an experienced tutor who will coach and guide you every step of the way. They will keep you accountable, motivated and inspired as you work through the course's comprehensive materials and master the key lessons of each session.

One of the advantages of the online course is that you work at your own pace.
It is not a chat room set up where you have to be online at a certain time. However, you need to be disciplined and follow the program. Finish Week 1 in Week 1 and Week 2 in Week 2 etc. and try not to fall too far behind.

Each week, you will work through specific daily exercises designed to put the tools and techniques you are learning into practice. Once you've done the exercises you will post them on your class Writers' Board. Your tutor will give you feedback on two pieces of your writing every week.

As well as receiving feedback from your tutor, you will interact with your fellow writers by giving and receiving targeted feedback. This will nurture your creativity and develop your writing. To improve, you need to see how others respond to your work and become a more discerning reader.

The time required for actual writing per day is 10 -15 minutes. It is by doing a little every day and forming a writing habit that you become a writer. This way you experience the pleasure of accessing your creativity on a regular basis and working towards making your writing dreams a reality.

However, the whole process from reading your lessons, writing your exercises, typing them up and then posting them onto the Writers' Board and giving feedback should take around 45 minutes to one hour a day, five times a week. You can do more if you have time!

The practical application of the tools and techniques provided, coupled with the interactive writing exercises and targeted feedback, will enable your writing to take a quantum leap forward over the four weeks.

During the four-week process you will:

  • Unlock the power of your unconscious. Discover your creative power and confidence. Find your voice and the stories you want to write.

  • Show that when you free your imagination your writing has that quality that makes other people want to read what you have written.

  • Discover what is stopping you from writing to your potential. Overcome writers' block forever and learn to silence your inner critic.

  • Create images that evoke emotions. You'll learn how to bring your characters to life, draw readers into your fictional world and keep them there.

  • Discover the power of using significant detail. It will have an immediate powerful impact on your writing. It is one of the keys to powerful writing.
  • Be introduced to how story structure works. You will learn how story structure exists to reveal character. They are two sides of the same coin.

  • Experience the creative joy and fun of writing from your imagination. You've got to learn to get out of your own way and make the process of writing fun and exciting in order to tap into your creative potential.
  • Do specifically designed in-class exercises that will kick-start your writing and take it to another level. You're not so much taught to write, you get it.
  • Receive and learn how to give creative, targeted feedback that will bring out the best in you and your writing.
  • Write a short story.
