Roland Fishman discusses the
Unlocking Creativity Course

"The course has been a real turning point for me. I learnt more about creative writing than I did in my degree or in my post grad studies. Which really says something about how much I learnt in four weeks. (Unlocking Creativity).

The course showed me that I could find it within me - the "it" being the words, the images, the emotions that had been bogged down in utter self doubt. This course gets you connected with your deepest passion."

Jacinta Walpole

"It was fantastic - the best course I've ever done. I've learnt to trust myself - however wacky - keep writing - so many things - too numerous to mention! I'm sure my writing has improved - the way I understand and write and feel about the world surely has.

It was brilliantly organised, seamless, lovely leaders - hard to believe that so many great writers and lovely people could be in the room at the same time."

Mandy Newman, author - How to Say I Do?

"I spent a lifetime teaching and talking about writing. These workshops at last got me doing it."

Dr Arnie Goldman - Lecturer, English Literature

"Thank you so much for the amazing class, I really did not believe such an impact could be made in four weeks, but it was incredible.

I took six to seven writing classes during my time in university and this four week course beat them all out of the water!"

Gina Lednyak from New York City

"You've said you've never heard me talk so passionately about my writing as I have after every Wednesday night. At last!

The reason is for the first time I'm empowered to get writing. The story I want to tell is inside me and the Unlocking Creativity course has given me the tools to extract it."

Karina Newport

"Have just finished a great creative writing course. It was a lot of fun - more fun than I would have thought but the great thing it taught me is that writing/creativity is within all of us.

The ultimate gift is knowing that the daily act of writing will unlock a pathway to my soul."

Laura Watson

"You were right. The course is fantastic. I didn't really know what to expect. But I trusted and went along for the ride and really feel as though I've gained a great deal more confidence than I had before.

I've figured out that I am creative and expressive and I surprise myself with the flight of fancy that my imagination takes me on. What a journey!!"

Karena Slaninka

"I've just finished that writing course I've been doing and I'm going to miss it so much - the communal creativity and humming of like minded writers on a mission. I nearly missed the last class, but went at the last minute and I'm so glad I did."

sinster intent
"After two unsuccessful manuscripts I was searching for a creative writing course I could do to give me the confidence and tools needed to find a stronger voice and allow me to tap into my imagination. Unlocking creativity did all this and more .I walked away from this course feeling much more confident in my own abilities as well as full of motivation to start my next manuscript, which turned into my first fictional crime novel Sinister Intent."

Karen M. Davis published by Simon & Schuster

"Reading back over my first novel, I'm aware of a change at the point where I started doing the Writers' Studio course (Unlocking Creativity). It's where my descriptions went from run of the mill to, I think, much more visual.

No one can give you a secret formula for 'how to write', but the Writers' Studio seems able to unleash the wild writer beast in us all!"

Yasmin Boland - author, journalist, astrologer - Carole King is an Alien and All the Rage

STAR_ATTRACTION‘Before I did the Unlocking Creativity course I knew I loved to write creatively but had no idea how I might start to channel that into something like a novel. The course teaches the basics of storytelling in a really accessible and inspiring way. Things like the importance of sensory detail in scene setting, writing a character’s emotion and conflict on every page.

‘The techniques really worked for me and I’m still a little bit amazed I was able to write a book and have it published using them. I refer to the notes I took during Unlocking Creativity even while I’m working on my second book for Penguin.'

Vanessa Stubbs, author and journalist, Star Attraction

Seaweed1"I loved Unlocking Creativity so much, I returned and did it a second time and will definitely do it again (and again). The support and encouragement from Roland, Kathleen and your fellow writers is inspirational and hugely motivational. It’s the best thing I did for my writing and the best thing I did for myself."

Ali Whitelock - author of Poking Seaweed with a Stick and Running Away From The Smell

barossa living"I can’t believe how much I’ve loved this course. How much I’ve looked forward to coming every week, despite some initial anxiety that I’d be a complete failure. It’s made me feel quietly proud that I’ve actually made this commitment to start writing. The doing of it is so wonderfully fulfilling. A really empowering experience. Brilliant."

Caroline Roessler - former managing editor of the Australian Women's Weekly and current editor of Barrossa Valley Living magazine

Writers who make use of the Writers' Board are amazed by its benefits.

As well as receiving feedback on one piece of work per week from your tutor online, you will also learn to give and receive feedback. To become a better writer, you need to become a discerning reader.

During the four-week process you will:

  • Unlock the power of your unconscious. Discover your creative power and confidence. Find your voice and the stories you want to write.
  • Show that when you free your imagination your writing has that quality that makes other people want to read what you have written.
  • Discover what is stopping you from writing to your potential. Overcome writers' block forever and learn to silence your inner critic.
  • Create images that evoke emotions. You'll learn how to bring your characters to life, draw readers into your fictional world and keep them there.
  • Discover the power of using significant detail. It will have an immediate powerful impact on your writing. It is one of the keys to powerful writing.
  • Be introduced to how story structure works. You will learn how story structure exists to reveal character. They are two sides of the same coin.
  • Experience the creative joy and fun of writing from your imagination. You've got to learn to get out of your own way and make the process of writing fun and exciting in order to tap into your creative potential.
  • Do specifically designed in-class exercises that will kick-start your writing and take it to another level. You're not so much taught to write, you get it.
  • Receive and learn how to give creative, targeted feedback in class and online that will bring out the best in you and your writing.
  • Write a short story.
