TEN
-WEEK ONLINE WRITERS’ GYM

Pre-requisite: Unlocking Creativity Course
How the course works

The course is designed for people who have finished Unlocking Creativity either live or online and want a structure and a process to follow so that they will keep writing.

It is easy to become a writer. The trick is staying a writer.

The imagination is a fragile muscle. To keep it alive requires time and effort. The more you write, the more your writing will improve.

Each week you will be given exercises designed to build on what you’ve done in Unlocking Creativity and enable you to learn more about the craft of writing.

Each week you will:
  • Be given three targeted writing exercises designed to help you develop your writing and understanding of character building and storytelling. These will include among others dialogue, inner dialogue, moral dilemma, desire, conflict, movitvation and stakes.
  • Receive three-pronged feedback from our online tutor on one piece of writing per week.
  • Give and receive feedback from fellow writers.
  • Discuss writing issues with other members of the group and your online tutor on our new Writers’ Lounge.

Feedback

You will receive feedback from your writing tutor who will identify what you communicated through your writing, what works in your writing and what could be improved.

The feedback will not only inspire you to keep writing, but it will also develop your writing. By being told what is working and what could be improved, your writing will develop to the next level.

You will also be expected to provide two pieces of feedback for every piece you post. It is an important part of the process.

TESTIMONIAL

"The Writer’s Gym is exactly that. A way to flex your cerebral muscles, engage parts of your body that have not been used for a while (if at all) and exercise your imagination. Like a gym, it is hard work but the rewards come with time as you see your writing take shape.

You soon learn to stop comparing yourself to the other writers in leotards and legwarmers and instead focus on your own potential! Posting a good piece gives you feelings of satisfaction that you might compare with a good workout! The instructors are there to help and encourage but they cannot do the programme for you.

I have learnt about writing on two levels. The macro side, if you like, has shown me that daily writing is enjoyable, fulfilling and possible. That having your work read and in turn reading other peoples' is immensely satisfying and rewarding.

On the micro level I have learnt the importance of structure to a piece and the delicate balance or dance with imagination and creative flair. It is easy to get that balance askew. Even in the narrow confines of our word limits it is possible to create scenes with bricks of detail, inner and outer dialogue and sensory perceptions that leave you wanting to read on.

In short, the course has opened up a new vista for me and for that I am truly grateful."
