During the Course you will:
Learn
all about story structure and apply it to your
story. Ninety per cent of novels and screenplays
are rejected because of poor structure.
Find
the story you want to write. The one that will
inspire and excite you during the writing process
and give you the best chance of success.
Be
coached and guided every step of the way until you
have completed your first draft.
During
the First Draft course, we meet at our Studio one
Saturday per month from 10.00am until 6.00pm. Plus
one full weekend to find the spine of your story.
If you miss any classes you can do them
online.
The
course includes a unique interactive online
component and weekly feedback in between classes
with Roland Fishman.
We
recommend that you spend 30 to 60 minutes a day,
4-5 days a week, working on your scenes.
The Course is Divided into Two
Sections
Part
One - Finding the Spine of your Story
(One Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and one full
weekend.)
Before
you start your first draft, you will follow a
process during which you will find and crystallise
the story you want to write. You will then break
this down into a ten-step outline.
Part
Two - Writing your First Draft: A Form not a
Formula
(Eight full Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and
online.)
Once
you have come up with your ten-step outline, you go
back to the beginning and write your story one
step, one scene at a time.
You
will:
Learn
how to build your story one step, one scene at a
time.
Be
guided through a twenty nine story-step process.
This is not a formula, rather an orchestrated
dance between the detailed story structure and
your unconscious mind.
Use
scene templates and sequencing techniques to
bring your scenes and writing to life.
Apply
stuctural techniques that will put pressure on
your characters and create drama and
tension.
Learn
tools to create powerful characters and take
them on a profound journey of change.
Roland
Fishman put George Miller, director of Babe
and Mad Max, through the process. He
described it as "fantastic" and "revelatory".
He
said it was the best experience he'd had with a
script consultant because it helped him develop his
story from "the inside out." The story steps were,
he said, "an incredibly useful tool. Very
empowering
very, very inspiring."
As
Robert McKee said, "For writers who can tell a
quality story it is a sellers' market, always has
been, always will be."
The
course is a testament to the fact that everyone has
a story to tell. A story that other people will
want to read,
One
that has readers wanting to know what happens next
while taking their main character on an emotional
and spiritual journey of change.
It
is just a matter of learning the craft of
storytelling, following a step by step process and
putting in the work,
