Unlocking Creativity is suitable for complete beginners, professional writers and anyone in between. This four week course is the first stage in the pathway to achieving your writing goals, whatever they might be.

Roland Fishman, who established the Writers' Studio in 1992, conducts all live classes.

Over the four weeks you will learn eight essential tools and techniques that will unlock your creativity, kick start your writing and dramatically improve the quality of your writing and story telling ability.

The structure for the four weeks is as follows:

In Week One you will do a series of exercises that will give you tools and techniques to tap into the power of your imagination.

In Week Two you will learn how to create emotion in your writing, using bricks of detail. This will help you connect with your reader and bring your characters to life.

In Week Three you will be introduced to the character journey, how story structure works and you will start writing scenes. You will also learn how to build images into your work, one of the fundamental building blocks of fiction.

In Week Four you will write a guided five scene short story.

By this time you will have learnt how to connect with the characters you are writing, make them come alive on the page and you will have learnt to develop your writing voice.

Most people are amazed at how much their writing improves from the very first class. They discover that their writing is far better than they could have imagined and they have more to say than they ever thought possible. As Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Even though the course is fiction-based and a lead-in to the Novel and Script First Draft Course, it is a complete course in itself.

Many people, after completing Unlocking Creativity, have gone on to have their work published, both fiction and non fiction, including novels, short stories, articles, short films, feature films and non fiction books. See alumni and testimonials.

The tools and techniques you learn will dramatically improve your writing and your relationship to the creative process. Whether it be fiction writing, journalism, academia, film, television, advertising, the corporate world or for your own pleasure.

IN ADDITION TO THE FACE TO FACE LIVE CLASSES

Please note, the process doesn't stop when you leave each class.

Daily at-home exercises and our unique interactive online Writers' Board will keep the learning process alive and fun for you at home between the live sessions.

Unlocking Creativity is very much a "doing" process. If you do the work, you will learn to create the magic on the page.

Students who make use of the Writers' Board are amazed by its benefits. As well as receiving feedback on 2 pieces of work per week from your online tutor, you will also learn to give and receive feedback from other course participants.

It is a wonderful learning tool and discipline. To become a better writer, you need to become a better and discerning reader.The Writers' Board will also help keep you inspired throughout the week and ensure the learning continues at home and will help you create the most important quality a writer needs - a writing habit.

This interactive online component is one of the many features that set us apart from other writing institutions.

Unlocking Creativity has been running since 1992 and been conducted more than 220 times with over 2,800 students successfully completing the course both online and in face-to-face classes.

At home exercises.

Unique interactive online Writers' Boards, where you can post your work, give and receive feedback from your course participants and receive feedback on some of your work from our online tutor twice a week. Password protected and only available to your class.

Students who are unable to attend a live class in their chosen four week course, can make up that week's work online.

UNLOCKING CREATIVITY COURSE OUTCOMES

During the course you will:

• Unlock the power of your unconscious. Develop your creative potential and build confidence in your writing ability.

• Find your voice and learn the tools and techniques to create the stories you want to write.

• Experience the creative joy and fun of writing from your imagination. You'll learn to get out of your own way and make the process of writing fun and exciting. This is one of the keys to unlocking your creativity.

• Discover what is stopping you from writing to your potential. Overcome writers' block forever and learn to silence your inner critic. When you free your imagination your writing has that quality that makes other people want to read what you have written.

• Learn how to create images that evoke emotion in your readers. Images are one of the fundamental building blocks of fiction. Evoking emotions in your readers is one of the key elements in creating powerful fiction.

• Develop the ability to draw readers into your fictional world and keep them there.

• Discover the power of using significant detail, the lifeblood of good writing. Learning to use detail effectively, will have an immediate, powerful impact on your writing.

• Be introduced to how story structure works. You will learn how story structure exists to reveal character. They are two sides of the same coin.

• In the final class you will write a guided short story to demonstrate the power of combining your imagination with classic story structure.

"I had already completed my first book and was struggling to keep writing.  I used to sit at my PC for hours on end staring at the blank screen waiting to be granted the inspiration to write – as if inspiration came from some mystical source outside of myself.    What a load of bollocks that turned out to be. 

Unlocking Creativity at The Writers' Studio taught me that the inspiration to write comes from the process of writing itself, not from thinking about writing and that all I had to do was silence my inner critic (which is normally very loud and swears a lot), keep my pen moving and allow myself to write junk.  Now as I sit down to write, so long as I have these three basic ‘rules’ going on in my head, I can write and am constantly amazed at what appears on the page.

Writing like this is coming from a different place, that secret place inside us where the magic lives.  It all sounds so terribly simple – and strangely enough, it is.  Turns out writing doesn’t have to be that torturous hair-pulling affair after all.
